Trauma happens when a distressing lived experience has a long-lasting emotional response. It can change your view of who you are, the world around you and your ability to regulate your emotions, relate to others or feel safe.
Trauma is not only from the life threatening or scary events that can happen, it can also be from the things that didn’t happen. Not feeling loved or understood, not having safety, belonging or basic needs met can have just as a lasting and profound impact.
Understanding how trauma has affected you personally is the fist step in healing. This includes identifying your automatic reactions to situations and people around you, how you cope and/or avoid reminders of the trauma, as well as how it has impacted your daily life, beliefs, and relationships.
From here, we can build new skills, challenge narratives as well as integrate them in areas where you have felt stuck in unhealthy cycles that have got in the way of healing.
